SAS and SATA drives

Sep 15, 2021 | Blog

WipeOS supports all of the most common storage devices – two that we see very often are the SATA and SAS drives.

SAS stands for Serial Attached SCSI, which may sound familiar, as Parallel SCSI was a popular type for CD-ROM drives in the past. The difference is that SAS can perform significantly faster than SATA.

SAS

SAS is typically used in the enterprise or server environment. It is for those companies that need reliable storage and allows for many users to access it all at the same time. SAS is more durable with a higher throughput for a large number of drives on one controller, allowing SAS the ability to support high-capacity servers that need to be online 24/7. These drives are typically much more expensive, but they are much more useful when many users are accessing the drive at the same time.

SATA

SAS is a superset of ATA — an ATA port will plug into a SAS port, but not the other way around. SAS has extra connectors not present on an ATA device. Most consumer-grade drives are ATA. Most commercial-grade storage devices are SAS. As a rule of thumb, SAS generally has a higher bandwidth than ATA.
